Familiarity with the text, ability to explain any difficult/especial words that may come in the passage or anything especial about the prose/poem/play will be tested.

 

Paper 2

Literary Criticism

The ability of Students to respond to language, the use of vocabulary, which heightens meaning, will be tested. They should be able to differentiate between the literal meaning and the implied meaning. Attention would be paid to writers / poets/ particular from such as the short story or the lyric form.

N.B. All examples would be taken from the texts as much as possible so that students are very familiar with the texts and learn the language content of the texts. These would be supplemented with examples outside the texts.

There will be specific questions on the text that have been covered from Preliminary examination onwards drawing attention to specific techniques and use and effectiveness of particular words, phrases and sentences and general questions reference to unseen passages, test comprehension and ask the candidates personal response.

 

Paper 3

Translation

Students should gain experience in translation material that is general as well as specific. Questions will cover translation from Sinhala to English and vice versa.

(1) Example - terminology - as required specifically for office work/ economics/ Buddhist scriptures / gazette notifications instructions travel documents etc.

(2) Ordinary correspondence - letters, telegrams, messages

(3) Translations of the gist / summary of an original
